As with any type of metal... sweat and oil from your hands can rust the blade. Wiping a little WD40 on them occasionally will help prevent the swords from rusting. This will also help the swords to stay looking shiny and new. If there is rust on the sword from handling, a very light weight steel wool pad will take off the surface rust with no effort.
